Evaluation report on the forum “Media and Society”
As a professional journalist I will emphasize in this report in what manner I’ve been influenced in my profession by the Forum form Timisoara from 23- 25th November.
The lectures were well prepared by the guests from the Netherlands. I acknowledged the way of life of the Protestant and Reformat community from this country, and also the way that this particular community reports itself to the modern media.
In the first day (on Thursday) I had the opportunity to listen the lecture of a Norwegian journalist. Professor Arne H. Fjeldstad shared his experience from the Middle East in Christian media. Even though, personally, as a professional journalist, I totally disagree with his method I understood what does the press and the modern media mean to the Christian community and journalists.
The most relevant lecture in this conference (considering the topic) was the one of Jan Schippers on the media policy of the European Union. This is the thing that I thing the lecturers from the Netherlands and Norway should have emphasized more, since in less than two months Romania will be a member of the European community. It would have been more helpful for me but also for the fellow journalists from the Christian media.
Overall my expectations for this forum were too high. I thought it was something else, and I consider (here I think I can speak for all the journalists present, from the non-Christian media) that I was mislead. We weren’t told the whole truth about this meeting. There were times when I thought I was in a protestant church listening to a pastor telling his people that the media is Evil.
Personally I think everyone should make the difference between the traditional media and the Christian radio stations, televisions or papers. They are two different things. Even though I don’t work in a Christian radio, and I am not attending any church I am guided in my profession and personal life as well, by Christian values like honesty and tolerance. I always try to inform correct and as soon as possible my listeners, and as objective as possible. Our targets are totally different. It is one thing to broadcast news, interviews, music and other journalistic materials, and an other thing to have a microphone and the means of modern technology at our disposal to read the Gospel for instance. There is no doubt, radio is a medium, but reading the Gospel on the radio, or giving quotes in some preaches on air is not journalism.
Ignoring media, and not reading papers, not listening to the radio or not watching television is not a solution for a good Christian. We have to be as aware as possible of the reality, the world that we live in. We always have the choice to select the programs or the papers. The journalist does not have the role to transform (as one of the lecturers said), but to inform. To inform is the key word that can define journalism.
Regarding the organization details at this forum, the only things that were missing were the debates, the discussions, questions and answers after each lecture.
As a conclusion I do not regret participating to this meeting. I have understood what Christian media means to the Christian community and how they see the non-Christian media
